Meet the founder
Hi, I'm Marvin Smit.
I'm 37, based in the Netherlands, and yoga has become my daily practice over the past two years. I came to it looking for stress relief and better flexibility — the usual reasons — and stayed because it works. What started as a few evening sessions turned into a real practice, and along the way I spent more time than I care to admit researching mats, blocks, and gear, trying to figure out what was actually worth buying.
I'm a long-time beginner, not a certified instructor. That distinction matters: everything on this site comes from research, public reviews, and where applicable, my own practice — never from claims I can't back up. When I haven't personally used a product, I say so. When I have, I'll tell you what worked and what didn't, honestly.
Everything published on this site is written and edited by me. No ghostwriters, no faceless content team. If you spot an error or have a question, you can reach me at hello@theyogasensei.com — corrections happen fast and they're noted in the article.
- Long-time practitioner, not an instructor
- Sole author and editor of every article
- NL-based, writing in English
- Transparent sourcing on every claim
Editorial methodology
How this site is made.
Every product recommendation on this site follows a consistent methodology. We publish this openly so you know exactly how we work — and what we will never do.
01
Research-first
Products are selected based on publicly available specifications, manufacturer documentation, and aggregated user reviews across multiple platforms — not paid placement or affiliate priority.
02
Transparent sourcing
When claims appear in content, the source is identifiable. We don't invent statistics, testing periods, review counts, or specifications.
03
Personal use, when applicable
Where Marvin has personally used a product, this is stated explicitly. Most products covered on this site have not been personally tested — instead, they're researched and compared.
04
Affiliate transparency
This site uses affiliate links (Amazon Associates and others). Earned commissions never influence which products are recommended.

Content is reviewed periodically. If you spot an error, email hello@theyogasensei.com — corrections are made promptly and noted in the article.
Why this platform exists
Why this exists
Most yoga gear content online is either paid promotion or copy-paste filler.
This site is the opposite: research-first, honestly written, and updated when I find something better.
That is the whole pitch.

“Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory.”

Co-founder of Ashtanga Yoga
What we believe
Honesty First
Recommendations are grounded in publicly verifiable specs and aggregated reviews — never invented testing.
Quality Over Quantity
Better fewer things, chosen well, that truly support your practice.
Mindful Living
Yoga extends beyond the mat into how you live, work and rest.
Learn. Practice. Grow.
We are all students. The journey is the practice, and the practice is life.
Community Matters
We are here to uplift and inspire a thoughtful community of mindful movers.
About our imagery
Meet Aiko, our visual brand character.
Many of the people-in-practice images on this site feature Aiko — a recurring fictional character generated with AI. She represents the calm, focused practice The Yoga Sensei stands for, but she is not a real person, a certified teacher, or a product reviewer.
Aiko is a visual brand anchor. She is never used to endorse a product, give an opinion, or appear as the author of any article — every piece of writing on this site is by Marvin (above). When an Aiko image illustrates a pose or practice, it is checked for anatomical accuracy before it goes live; anything that misrepresents alignment is rejected or redrawn.
If you ever see an image where this distinction feels unclear, or a pose that looks off, let us know — we will fix it.
